Functional medicine shifts the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice toward an approach centered on optimal health. It considers the whole person, taking into account genetic background, personal and family history, and health journey. In partnership with the patient, the functional medicine practitioner connects genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that influence long-term health.

The goal is to understand the underlying mechanisms that contribute to chronic conditions and provide concrete tools to address root causes, rather than simply treating symptoms. This proactive, personalized approach aims to support lasting health and overall well-being.

What a functional medicine consultation involves

Preparation

Before your appointment, you’ll be asked to complete questionnaires to allow for a comprehensive assessment of your health status and concerns.

Initial consultation (60 minutes)

Your first appointment includes:

  • A thorough assessment of your health status
  • A detailed physical exam
  • A review of your medical and family history
  • Analysis of lifestyle factors (diet, activity, stress, environment)
  • Lab test prescriptions, if needed

Included follow-up consultation (30 minutes)

Once results are available, a 30-minute appointment is scheduled to review them and establish a personalized action plan tailored to your health priorities.

Subsequent follow-up consultations (30 minutes each, $225 per session)

These appointments help track your progress, adjust your care plan as needed, and provide ongoing support toward your health goals.

Areas explored in depth

  • Genetic background

While certain genes may increase susceptibility to certain diseases, recent research shows that environment, experiences and lifestyle can influence gene expression. Functional medicine aims to optimize these interactions.

  • Environmental exposures

Air and water quality, diet, physical activity level, toxic exposures or experienced trauma are all factors with a direct impact on health.

  • Mind-body connections

Psychological, social and spiritual dimensions play a major role in overall balance. Integrating them provides a holistic view of health, beyond physical symptoms alone.
